FIRE DRAGON® Shantung Maple - A patended (PP #17367) Metro Maples discovery. This bullet-proof tree can take the full Texas sun and has beautiful burnt orange or red spring and summer growth that turns brilliant red to red-orange in the fall. A superior leaf shape and a better branching habit that makes for a more elegant looking tree. Grows to 25-30 feet tall and wide with age. Very nice two-toned brown fissured bark. Drought tolerant. Easy to grow. Shantung Maple - A beautiful medium-size shade tree with Sweetgum-like leaves that takes alkaline and clay soils, drought, cold and wind. Acer truncatum has purplish-red colors in spring and then a brilliant yellow/gold fall color. Sometimes called Purpleblow maple. Very nice-two toned fissured bark. Texas A&M Superstar. Rhododendrons available for spring 2010.  Amaze your friends and feel the excitement of growing these amazing evergreen shrubs.  Large 4' bushes have dozens of flower buds that will bloom late April in large trusses of 10 to 15 flowers.  Grow in morning to dappled sun in raised beds of pure pine bark.  Fertilize with azalea food February and May, deadhead old flowers, and water lightly every 3 or 4 days when its hot.  Keep the bark replenished on a regular basis.  Varieties we now have are Anah Krutschke, English Roseum, and Jean Marie.  ALREADY SOLD OUT 2-22-10.
Golden Dragon Shantung Maple - A Metro Maples discovery introduced in 2009.  This Shantung was chosen for the best and most consistent leaf shape with sharply pointed teeth and consistent brilliant golden-yellow fall color.   New introduction - 5-6 foot whips, $35.
Doric Dragon Shantung Maple - A Metro Maples discovery introduced in 2009.  This Shantung was chosen for its columnar habit.  The mother tree is 25 feet tall and only 8 feet wide.  Fall color a golden-yellow.  3gal/$35.  New introduction - 4 foot whips, 3gal - $35.
Skinny Dragon Shantung Maple - A Metro Maples discovery introduced in 2009.  This Shantung was chosen for its narrow leaf lobes giving the appearance of a dissected leaf.  The mother tree is 12 feet tall and 10 feet wide.  Fall color usually a golden-yellow, sometimes mixed with orange or red.  3gal/$35.  New introduction - available fall 2010..
Paperbark Maple, Acer gresium - A most exquisite maple and easy to grow. Prefers some afternoon shade but can handle the sun most years. Can be grown as understory tree. Leaves unfold like fuzzy coppery pussy-willows. The bark on mature plants is a smooth and shiny copper and chocolate color and exfoliates in paper-thin layers all year long. Peeling bark will shine when backlite from the sun. Fall colors are a brilliant red or a mixture of red to yellows. Slow growing to only 20-30 feet. Ginkgo 'Autumn Gold' - An 'Honorary Maple', this ancient tree has no known pests or diseases. Beautiful fan-shaped leaves turn a brilliant butter-yellow in the fall. This is a grafted male clone that produces no seed. Slow growing but easy to grow to 40 feet. grafted yealings only $5,  3 gal/$15, 7 gal/$25-SOLD out, 1.5" calipers, best shapes ever, SOLD OUT.  More expected this fall.
Ginkgo 'Robbie's Twist' - This new cultivar has more narrow fan-shaped leaves turning a brilliant butter-yellow in the fall. This is a grafted male clone that produces no seed. Contorted growth habit, slow to grow to 10 feet.  1 gal/$18
Trident Maple, Acer burgerianum - Very nice small, 3-lobed leaves on a dense growing medium-tall sized maple. Likes pH neutral soils but does not burn in alkaline soils. Bright fall colors of yellow or red. Bark peels with age and has various tones of brown to orangish-brown.  3+ foot seedlings - $6-$10.
Amur maple - Acer ginnala takes the heat and sun with bushy growth to 20 feet. Will grow in alkaline soils. Bright red to yellow fall colors. Easy to grow. small seedlings 1 gal/$12
 

Japanese Maples for Shade/Limited Hot Sun:  In hot climates they prefer high shade or, morning sun to 1-2 hours of midday sun with dappled shade the rest of the day.

Acer palmatum - The green leaf species that is a very nice and dependable tree which is used for the understock in my grafting. The small leaves can handle some sun and turn a bright red in the fall. Deshojo - A small leaf on a semi-dwarf maple to 12 feet with a compact habit. Much used in bonsai. Brilliant red in spring, like bright flowers that can be seen a mile away, that will last several weeks if it's cool. Summer growth flush is also bright red (may require pruning to encourage this new growth). This plant is always changing and fun to grow and watch. Emperor I - A newer red leaf similar to Bloodgood but more narrow leaf lobes and improved growth with a compact shape to 15 feet and longer-lasting leaf color. Fall Fire - A selection of Acer palmatum with an even nicer looking green leaf, with lobes that are perfectly shaped with nice serrated margins, and a very bright pinkish-red fall color. Easy to grow to 18 feet. 2 gal/$35
Fireglow - A newer selection of Bloodgood with a smaller leaf and growth-rate. Stays more compact and grows only to 12 feet. (I've seen a 14 footer in Grove,OK). Color is bright red to dark purple-red and holds color much better in late summer than any other cultivar. Spectacular brilliant red in fall (Colors up a little later than Bloodgood. Koto no Ito - A semi-dwarf green linearlobum, or strap leaf, with extremely narrow lobes and nice green bark. Upright, twiggy habit to only 8 feet. Easy to grow. Great in containers. Brilliant mixture of reds and yellows in fall to all orange. 1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35, 20-45 gal/$180-$225 HUGE

Ichiyogi - A sister seedling to Osakasuki with more orangish fall color. 1gal/$25.  
JapaneseSunrise - A new Coral Bark Maple is interesting in all seasons. Brilliant coral red and yellow and orange bark in winter (needs the cold and the sun for the brightest red bark color), with a very attractive long-lasting bright fall color of yellow to gold. Meigetsu 'Itaya' - Acer japonicum selection with deeply incised and very large, leaf lobes, stems that have pink tones in winter, and fall colors like a very bright rainbow. 1 gal/$25, 25 gal/$225 and $275.
Moonfire - A newer selection of Fireglow with a small leaf and slow growth-rate and holding red color in the heat very well. Stays more compact and grows only to 12 feet. New to Metro Maples but should have spectacular brilliant red color in fall.   5', 10 gal/only $125
MoonriseTM - A new patented form of the Golden Full Moon maple from my Oregon maple farming buddy, Carl Munn. Unlike the Golden Fullmoon, this one takes the heat and has brilliant spring colors of orange-gold, yellow-green, and bright red. Leaves keep a nice golden green color through summer with a beautiful, rounded, eleven-lobe leaf. Grows to 10 feet. Fall color is yellow. Nishiki Gawa - The pine bark maple. Green leaves, vigorous to 18 feet, heat tolerant, very beautiful corky bark first appearing on 3 year-old wood and getting prominent with age. Bright orangish-red fall color. Easy to grow. 2 gal/$35 and 5-7 gal/$75
Nuresagi - Translates to Wet Heron and has a dark red leaf with an exceptional compact shape to 14 feet and excellent fall color. A favorite upright red for many people.  Bright red fall colors. 1 gal/$25,  2 gal/$35 
Ogon Sarassa - A large and very dark, almost black, red leaf, smaller growing than Bloodgood to 14 feet with a sturdy habit and green bark, very bright yellow and orange  fall color, yellow twigs and seeds. 1 gal/$25, NEW - over 10 feet, $625.

Oku shimo - Very small green leaves with striking rolled lobes making the leaves appear very pointed. Upright, twiggy, slow vase-shaped growth to 15 feet. Fall colors are nice yellow to oranges. 2 gal large/$35 (PICTURE BELOW). 3 gal/$55

Oregon Sunset - A nice red leaf that only holds color if given some sun (and it seems to be able to handle it). Grows with a thick, stocky limb structure, up to 12 feet, with bright red fall colors. 1ga;/$25
Osakasuki - A large green leaf on a fast and sturdy growing plant with green bark. Known for its brilliant orangish-red fall color which can also last longer than other Japanese maples. Pixie - A new semi-dwarf Bloodgood type with red leaves in spring and fall, but only growing to 6 foot tall and wide with a compact shape.  5' 15gal/$225.  NEW
Peaches 'n Cream - A very bright spring color combination of peach or red and pale green and white showing throughout the many prominent leaf veins and margins. The leaf is large with deeply incised curling lobes. Fall color is a bright red on a medium sized tree to 8 feet. 1 gal/$25
Red Emperor - A newer red leaf similar to Bloodgood but more narrow leaf lobes and grows faster with a compact shape to 18 feet and retains the leaf color better. Sango Kaku - The Coral Bark Maple is a very popular four-season plant. Brilliant coral red bark in winter (needs the cold and the sun for the brightest red bark color), with a very attractive long-lasting bright fall color of yellow, red and apricot. Shishigashira - A very distintive cultivar with very small, dark green, curled crinkled leaves and an upright, scupltured habit (most people will not recognize this plant as being a maple). Slow growing to 7 feet in 15 years. Blends of bright red and yellow late fall color, but looks orange from a distance. 1 gal/$35, NEW 20 gal/$225, $325, and $395 (PICTURE BELOW)
Seiryu - The blue-green dragon is an upright growing green-leaf dissectum that turns bright scarlet in fall. Very easy to grow and vigorous to 14 feet and can handle the sun as good as any. Green bark. 1 gal/$25, 10 gal/ $175, very large - $325 and $425, and $1595 3-inch caliper quoted as delivered and planted.
Shin deshojo - A small leaf, also used in bonsai, on a semi-dwarf maple to 12 feet that branches very well. Brilliant red in spring that lasts several weeks when it is cool. Summer is a subtle mottled pink and green, usually with a second growth flush of brilliant red. This plant loves pruning and encourages new bright red growth. Fall colors can be a brilliant red but can also be a mix of yellow and red. Pretty much identical to Deshojo. 1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35, 3 gal/$45, 10 gal/$145, 15 gal/$175 - $195.
A. sieboldianum 'Sode no uchi' - A maple from Japan with bright green small leaves with 9 to 11 sharp lobes, and very bright red and yellow fall colors.  Very hardy.  20 gal/$165, 25gal/$225  
Sumi nagashi - A beautiful deeply divided red leaf very bright fall red colors and green bark. It’s like the old cultivar 'Burgundy Lace' but much better due to its vigorous growth. Leaves bronze in summer but the tree produces many very bright red seeds that last into fall. Grows fast and narrow to 18 feet. 1 gal/$25, and 2 gal./$35, 5 gal/$55, 10 gal/$125, and 20-25 gal/$205-$265

Trompenburg - A vigorous purple-red leaf that has deeply incised leaf lobes that also roll downward, but will flatten-out in summer. Sometimes a very bright, shiny, dark purple color in May. Takes the sun and heat very well for a red leaf. Brilliant red fall color. A great one.  1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35, 5 gal/$65, 15 gal/$195
Ueno yama - Bright orange and yellow spring colors on a small leaf 10 foot tree. More orange than Orange Dream in spring but this one does not keep the very nice golden green leaf into summer. Yellow fall colors.  2 gal/$35, 10 gal/$165

Weeping (dissectums) Japanese maples follow:
Crimson Queen - Most popular dissected leaf cultivar that has a smaller leaf than most. Bright red in spring and brilliant red in fall with a mounded weeping habit. Slow growing to 6 feet tall with a wider habit. Bronze colors in July or August depending on the temperatures. 1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35, 7 gal/$95 and 10-15 gal/$145 to $175 (PICTURE BELOW shows smaller size than currently available), 25gal/$425.
Crimson Prince - A new red leaf dissectum that has already proved its toughness and is vigorous in the heat.  Will grow to 8 foot tall and wide.  10gal/$145. 
Emerald Lace - A most beautiful new dissectum with a weeping habit, and small green leaves.  Texas fall colors are bright red.  It looks and grows fast like Seiryu but weaps.  Should eventually grow to 12 feet tall.  25 gal/$280, NEW - 4', 45gal - $425.
Green Cascade - This maple has large, deeply incised and dissected leaf lobes that are green changing early to a brilliant orange in the fall. Sturdy growth habit that is low and wide up to 4 feet tall and 15 foot wide after many years. 1 gal/$25, 10 gal/$125
Inaba Shidare - A shiny purple-red dissectum in spring and very bright crimson in fall. Easier to grow than Crimson Queen (can take the sun better too), with a more weeping habit and wider width. Bronze colors in August, or sooner if grown in too much shade. 1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35, 7 gal/$125, 10gal/$145, 30+gal/$265-$575. 
Orangeola - A vigorous and dense, weeping orangish-red dissectum that changes each day to the summer blue-green color. Fall color is brilliant ruby red and can last longer than most. Easy to grow. Ornatum- A very old cultivar that can reach enormous sizes of twenty feet (in 100 years). Easy to grow. Dissected brick-red spring leaves quickly change to green, then to brilliant yellow in fall. 1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35
Palmatifidum - Dark green leaf dissectum that turns brilliant crimson, gold and yellow in the fall. Excellent grower with strong weeping habit.  2 gal/$35, 10 gal/$125 fall 2008 only, 15 gal/$165-$225
Red Dragon - The ultimate red dissectum (but slow growing and prone to dieback in extreme heat). Turns red again early in fall then a brilliant ruby red in fall. 1 gal/$25,  7 gal/$25, 10gal/$85
Stella Rosa - A new variety of red dissectum that I first saw in Italy a few years ago that held its dark red color better than all others over there.   2008 grafts/$25
Tamukeyama - Like Crimson Queen only the leaf is sturdier looking. Slightly faster and easier growing and can handle the sun better (will not hold its color well in deep shade). 1 gal/$25, 7 gal/$125, 10 gal/$145.  Large 5', great shapes, to $500.
Viridis/Waterfall - A very beautiful bright green dissectum that grows easy. Turns a brilliant yellow mixed with oranges in the fall. A great Japanese maple in the shade. (You can use the great texture of the leaves, bright green color, and its weeping habit grown among other plants to create a pleasing visual effect.) Easy to grow. 1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35, 15 gal/$185, 25 gal/$225.
Watnong - Also called Baldsmith this more delicate green leaf is tinted with some pink in spring and turns a brilliant red in the fall. Nice arching, spreading habit, more upright than some. Easy to grow. 1 gal/$25

Aratama - A very nice red semi-dwarf much like Shaina with a little large leaf and great spring color.   Fall color is a bright red and yellow mix on a medium sized bush to 4 feet. very full multi-branched 10 gal/$145, new grafts - $20.
Coonora Pgymy - A dwarf maple to 4 feet with very small, round, green leaves and colorful orange and red in fall. Very compact with age and easy to grow. UPDATE - I just saw a 7 foot one in Nacogdoches. 1 gal/$25, 2 gal/$35
Goshiki Kotohime - An upright dwarf with very nice small, deeply divided and toothed leaves, some variegated pink and red.  rooted 2gal/$35, 5+ feet - $495
Ground Cover - A very low, spreading dwarf with very nice small, deeply divided and toothed leave. 1gal/$25
Hanama nishiki - A dwarf maple with the smallest leaves on the tips but larger leaves in early spring, bronze edges in spring.  To 6 feet.  20 gal/$200.

Kashima - A dwarf with tiny leaves edged in rust in spring, growing low and wide.  25 gal/$200.

Mikawa yatsubusa - A very slow growing, bright green leaf, dwarf, with brilliant red and yellow fall color. Branches naturally curve and internodes are very closely spaced. 5 gal/$95 - large ones are here - $225-$325-$375
Murasaki kiyohime - A small green leaf that is edged with bright red in spring. Grows 4 foot tall and 9 foot wide. Dense branching. 2 gal/$45, NEW  $425.
