Super Dragon ™ Shantung Maple
This tree features a bright yellow-green color in summer. Fall colors are a mix of golden-yellow, cranberry red, and white. Grows to 18 feet tall by 18 feet wide. A Metro Maples discovery introduced in 2013. Federally registered with patent pending (Patent #26,414).
The red blush on ‘Super Dragon’ only lasts the first few weeks of spring, but it makes a dramatic entrance when it first leafs out in April.
This photo was taken in late April. ‘Super Dragon’ doesn’t need as much sun as it’s Shantung relatives, and would provide a great contrast to deep red Japanese maples in a dappled shade garden.
This cultivar stands out best in early summer, when it’s bright chartreuse leaves seem to glow — especially on cloudy days.
Fall colors are primarily yellow, but with some red mixed in from time to time.
